Poor Diet During Pregnancy, Increased Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes: Are They Related?

Can A Poor Diet During Pregnancy Increase Your Risk For Diabetes As An Adult?

Researchers may have discovered the mechanism behind increased risk of diabetes due to a poor maternal diet.

Type 2 diabetes is a growing concern in this country and fortunately for us there are some very smart people working very hard to understand why this is happening. Not only does diabetes present a significant health risk for the individual, it puts an increased burden on our health care system which is working hard enough as it is.

The research found that "individuals who experience a poor diet in the womb are less able to store fats correctly in later life." If your body can't store fat in your fat cells it will store it in the liver or muscle where it's more likely to cause other diseases like type 2 diabetes.

The article goes on to explain more complex biology and if you would like to read the entire article please click HERE.

A very important point should be made here. Just because you may not be visibly overweight doesn't mean you shouldn't be eating right and exercising. Men and women, pregnant or not need to eat right and exercise. If you have fat collecting in your liver and muscle it will not be visible from the outside. People of all shapes and sizes can be at risk for type 2 diabetes.

So here is my final point:
  • Research will continue to discover links between lifestyle and the related diseases

  • Proper diet and regular exercise will continue to be emphasized to fight these diseases

  • There will continue to be research validating the benefits of exercise during pregnancy

  • If you have not yet started your exercise routine, it's never to late!

Thank you for reading this post and best of luck to you in your health and fitness!
