Custom Program Components

Medical History – Contact doctor and receive medical clearance to start exercise program so the women’s health during pregnancy is not in question. Completion of PAR-Q form for medical records. Talk about past physical history and plan how that may impact the program going forward. This will be done for every new client before the program begins. It is a mandatory component for every custom and standard package.

Exercise Experience – Your history of physical activity will dictate the types, amount and intensity levels of your fitness program when pregnant. Guidance and recommendations will be given based on this information. Just doing the things you are used to doing may not be the best course of action. Our fitness professionals will steer you in the right direction so you will receive the greatest benefit and improved fitness during pregnancy.

Movement Analysis – Single leg balance test, squat test and/or lunge test will provide you with information on what muscles are tight, weak, over-active and under-active. This is the first step toward optimal movement and proper biomechanics during your pregnancy workout routines. It is our goal for you to move properly so you progress and improve thereby maximizing the benefits of exercise during pregnancy. If your body is not working correctly, aches and pains are more likely to surface. This component will give you the best chance to fight off unwanted discomfort.

Goal Setting – Realistic goals for fitness will be talked about and set. Healthy weight gain during pregnancy will be monitored and parameters regarding the amount of physical activity will be set and altered throughout the pregnancy according to how the woman is feeling. There will be situations where unrealistic expectations can lead to stress and anxiety. You should not expect to have weight loss during pregnancy. Having a clear and focused goal will calm any unnecessary anxiety and empower you to achieve your goals.

Fitness Program Design – Specific exercises for pregnant women will address each individuals needs. Weight training and pregnancy involve training the entire body with an emphasis on the core and changing needs throughout the pregnancy. You will know exactly what exercise to do, how often to do it and how many times and at what difficulty level.
$70 *Grouped Components Discounts Available

Postural Assessment – Standing posture, front and side views will identify potential problem areas. Specific areas such as lower back, upper back and neck can become areas of discomfort due to pore posture and changes in the body during the pregnancy. We will give you techniques to counter act these changes so discomfort can be minimized. You will be left with a greater understanding of how your body should feel when it is in the proper position, sense when it is not and take the necessary steps to correct it immediately.

Specific suggestions on when you should have your meals, how to combine nutrients, food choices, portion size, fluid intake, alternatives and food substitutes. All designed around your preferences and lifestyle. Referral to a Registered Dietitian will be recommended for those with specific dietary concerns dealing with pregnancy and nutrition. If you truly want to learn about nutrition and pregnancy vitamins, an RD is the way to go and we will refer you to one. You will be given tools to use for the rest of your life. This is half the battle when it comes to controlling weight gain after pregnancy. Give your body and your baby the proper nutrition it needs while avoiding weight problems in the future.

How weight training and pregnancy relate to Gestational Diabetes

Of course by now you know we are big believers in prenatal exercise programs and will go to the ends of the earth to promote them. We would like to give you more specifics on why pregnancy weight training helps fight Gestational Diabetes.

Weight training can be broken down into it's simplest form, the contracting muscle cell. We will not go into the Sliding Filament Theory of muscle contraction, but we will tell you something amazing happens biochemically inside your body.

Strength training will increase the amount of glucose receivers. These are the little guys who attach themselves to your cells and allow glucose (sugar) to enter without the help of insulin.

Now here is the important part so pay attention. Our good friends at the American Pregnancy Association say certain hormones released from the placenta during your first trimester which may cause insulin resistance (click HERE to view entire article). Now what if your cells where able to take in glucose (sugar) with out the help of insulin, everything would be good, right!

The moral of our story is, weight training is not only for building big muscles or toning your arms. It serves as a insurance policy against insulin resistance and ultimately Gestational Diabetes by allowing glucose to enter your cells without the help of insuline.

So take the advice of Fitness4Baby and our friends at WebMD, making positive changes in your lifestyle by including safe pregnancy exercises and pregnant weight training will give you the best chance to avoid Gestational Diabetes.

Let's Talk Healthy Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Most of the time, weight gain is something that sneaks up on us because of eating to much and moving to little. It also comes with a psychological fear and social taboo which can increase stress and make all matters worse.

In the world of Fitness,  Orange County personal trainers are constantly searching for the right combination of exercise and diet so their clients can loose weight. But when it comes to our pregnant clients, healthy weight gain during pregnancy will ensure a healthy baby and an easier time weight loss after delivery. We do not recommend weight loss during pregnancy.

So how bout some "Pregnancy Weight Gain Guidelines" courtesy of our friends and the Mayo Clinic. They first stress not everyone is created equal. Your pre-pregnancy weight, your health and the health of your baby are critical factors.

Pre-pregnancy weight = Underweight (BMI less then 18.5)
Recommended weight gain = 28 to 40 pounds

Pre-pregnancy weight = Normal weight (BMI 18.5 to 24.9)
Recommended weight gain = 25 to 35 pounds

Pre-pregnancy weight = Overweight (BMI 25 to 29.9)
Recommended weight gain = 15 to 25 pounds

Pre=pregnancy weight = Obese (BMI 30 or greater)
Recommended weight gain = 11 to 20 pounds

For the complete Mayo Clinic article, click HERE.

Your BMI is your Body Mass Index. You can calculate your BMI by the following equation:

BMI = (body weight in pounds/(height in inches) x (height in inches)) x 703

With the power of the world wide web, you can search one of many BMI calculators such as the CDC BMI Calculator. Of course for all of us who build strong muscles through safe and effective exercises, the BMI tends to over estimate due to the muscle tissue weight. But for most, it's fine.

Please subscribe or contact us if you need more information on this topic. Fitness4Baby is your resource for a healthy pregnancy.

Testimonials from Fitness4Baby Clients

"He made sure that I ate a well-balanced diet, and he just made me feel as a confident pregnant person and not a whale! I couldn't wait to have my baby! I felt good in my own skin, I had the same amount of energy as before I became pregnant, I did not suffer from the things I had read about in the pregnancy books such as morning sickness, becoming bloated, backaches or any other aches, trouble sleeping, and I gained a healthy 24 pounds and felt an incredible amount of energy and upbeat attitude throughout. I have told my friends that I have found the secret to a very comfortable pregnancy - exercise! You just feel so good! In fact, I was able to continue my cardio kickboxing (dance format) up to 2 weeks prior to my delivery."

Sincerely,
Winnie Sun

" I STARTED WORKING OUT WITH ERIC DURING THE SECOND TRIMESTER OF MY PREGNANCY AND MY DOCTORS WERE CONCERNED THAT I WAS GAINING TOO MUCH WEIGHT TOO FAST. SHORTLY AFTER I STARTED MY FOUR-DAY A WEEK WORKOUTS I BEGAN GAINING ABOUT ONLY ONE POUND A WEEK. I HAD MORE ENERGY AND FELT BETTER IN MY CLOTHES AND BETTER ABOUT MY PREGNANCY ALTOGETHER. ERIC WAS ENCOURAGING AND VERY COMPASSIONATE TO MY NEEDS AS AN EXPECTANT MOTHER. THE MAIN ASPECT OF HIM AS A TRAINER THAT I APPRECIATED MORE THAN ANYTHING WAS NOT THAT HE WAS HELPING TO KEEP ME IN SHAPE BUT HOW SENSITIVE HE WAS TO MY FEELINGS, HOW MY BODY FUNCTIONED AND "WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE PREGNANT" (SMILE).
WE WORKED OUT UNTIL TWO DAYS BEFORE I DELIVERED MY BEAUTIFUL SON. IN FACT, THE LAST DAY OF MY WORK OUT I WAS HAVING CONTRACTIONS WHICH HE WAS COMPLETETLY MORTIFIED ABOUT. BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE HOSPITAL I WAS DIALATED 4 CENTIMETERS WHICH WAS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. I PUSHED EIGHT TIMES AND FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER TYSON II WAS BORN. IT WAS SUCH AN EASY DELIVERY. I WAS ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED! I PUSHED FOR FOUR HOURS WITH MY DAUGHTER AND ONLY GOD KNOWS HOW MANY TIMES I PUSHED. THE KEY TO MY SECOND DELIVERY WAS ERIC'S CORE TRAINING! I AM CONVINCED THAT HAVING A STRONG CORE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND THAT DEFINITELY MADE THE DIFFERENCE THIS TIME AROUND.
A MONTH AFTER HAVING MY SON...I LOOKED LIKE A HADN'T GIVEN BIRTH AT ALL. THE RESULTS OF HIS WORKOUTS WERE AMAZING. ERIC'S CORE BASED TRAINING AND PREGNANCY WORKOUT PHILOSOPHY IS DEFINITELY ONE THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANY AND ALL EXPECTANT MOTHERS. I AM SO THANKFUL TO HAVE MET AND WORKED WITH HIM!!!"

Ways to Avoid Gestational Diabetes

One of the most common complications during pregnancy is Gestational Diabetes. The good news is it can be controlled and even avoided with proper diet and exercise. Specifically, resistance training increases your bodies Insulin Sensitivity thereby allowing glucose (blood sugar) to enter your cells and then be used for energy. As well, eating quality foods, combining your proteins carbs and fats, and frequent small meals, will help regulate your blood sugar levels.

Lifestyle changes are sometimes difficult and develop slowly. Do not wait until the last minute to make the right changes which will improve your life as well as the life of your baby.

Please view the below links for additional information. If you wish to consult a fitness professional, Fitness4Baby can assist you. Please contact Eric directly at: fitness4baby@gmail.com.
